THE POWER OF THOUGHTBy Julian ReedLet me tell you a true story.A long time ago, a young man decided to change his life. For many years he had worked in print. Day in and day out lived and breathed the industry. It consumed his life totally, his family and friends assumed he had married the business. He was unhappy and life was getting him down. One morning he awoke from yet another restless nights sleep tossing and turning, thinking of the tasks that would need to be done at work that day. But something was different. He was at the age when mortality had started to set in and he was experiencing his first mid life crisis. He sat up in bed and thought to himself, “I don’t want this type of life anymore, there must be something else I could do that I would be easier and more rewarding“. So for the next few nights he slept on it and each night asked God for some inspiration, some guiding light, a vision of what he could do.A week passed and nothing happened, another week passed and one morning like a flash of light the answer came to him. “I know what I would like to do, id like a little antique and coffee shop and to make life simple I would like to live in an apartment above“. He spoke to his partner who told him that the thought was nice, but it would probably never come to fruition (there were serious relationship problems setting in). Some nights he would dream of that little shop and the easier life. The weeks went into months the months into years and the dream slowly faded. Then suddenly the printers he worked for fell on hard times and made him redundant. And as if by chance a property with two shops and an appartment above presented itself to him. It was in the perfect location and the type of place he dreamed and hoped for all those years earlier. It was as if God had answered all his questions and thoughts and presented them to him in one big package So he got a mortgage and took the building. He worked hard for several years building the business, there were hard times as well as good but nothing much had changed. He worked all hours and became married to the shop. His relationship had also taken a turn for the worse. Then one morning he awoke from a restless nights sleep, you guessed tossing and turning, thinking of the tasks that would need to be done that day. But something was different. He realized he didn’t want it after all. And to make things even worse, that young man was me.The moral of the story.Well I got the simpler life that I asked for but not for the right reasons. I realized that at the time I was running away from problems in my personal life and thought simplifying things would make them go away. How wrong could I be. We all sometimes dream of a better life. We assume that the grass is greener on the other side and that by changing our lives our problems and baggage would be left behind. I believe that by asking God for a life changing experience it was presented to me. I thought by doing so that my problems would be left behind with my other life. I would not change the experience for anything, as it taught me a valuable life lesson. I needed to learn that life’s responsibilities and baggage come with you no matter what you do or where you go. So since then almost every decision that I make that could end up changing my life, I make with both feet firmly on the ground and in the knowledge that my problems go with me.So the lesson to learn from this is…………… You should always be very careful of what you ask for because maybe it will come true.
